Little help for SMEs in Competition report
The report from Canada’s Competition Policy Review Panel, called ‘Compete to Win’, was released at the end of June. In a June 26th press release, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business suggests that the report does not address the needs of small and medium-sized business owners.
The CFIB takes issue with the recommendation made in the report that government policies on entrepreneurship should focus only on those businesses who “demonstrate the desire and capacity to grow to become large enterprises” since it is only a small number of businesses that have the potential to grow into the large companies of the future.
Other recommendations of interest to small and medium-sized business owners include:
- that provinces consider allowing municipalities to impose a 1% value-added tax
- that all levels of government should work to reduce coporate tax rates
- the need to improve workplace training and Canada’s business education relative to the U.S.
