‘Throttling’ application filed with CRTC
The Canadian Association of Internet Providers (CAIP) filed an application on April 3rd asking the CRTC to issue an immediate order stopping Bell Canada from ‘throttling’ its internet services. The practice, the application alleges, was started by Bell unilaterally on March 13th. Bell responded to the application on April 15th.
In the answer filed with the CRTC, Bell calls its efforts to reduce bandwith usage related to the transmission of certain data (ie. getting slower service if you try to download music or videos) as an ‘internet traffic management solution’ which it applies equally to its own customers and internet service providers alike.
For anyone interested in reviewing the finer points of the arguments on both sides, you can check out the application and the response on the CRTC website. You can also file your own comments online.
